Frequently Asked Questions
What is Halotherapy?
Halotherapy is the fancy name for inhaled, dry salt therapy. Specialized equipment inside the salt room warms and pulverizes pharmaceutical grade salt (pure sodium chloride without any additives or anti-caking ingredients) and disperses it into the room as a dry aerosol. (When paying for anything called a ‘salt room session’, be sure to ask if they have this equipment.) During a halotherapy session you will be breathing in salt air that is being delivered in a carefully measured amount and dispersed throughout the room with a special ventilation system.
What are the Benefits of Halotherapy?
- Inhaling salt thins mucus
- Bacteria and viruses don’t survive well in a salt environment
- Unplug and relax
It’s difficult to list all of the possible benefits of Halotherapy. One of the primary benefits is that salt thins mucus. As you breathe in the dry salt aerosol, you will be lining your airways with salt. This will help to thin any mucus you have to make it easier to clear out of your body. Another benefit of lining your airways with salt is that it creates an unfriendly environment for bacteria and viruses. In this way, halotherapy supports your immune system. At Aki, our salt room walls, floor and ceiling are made entirely from Himalayan salt. The backlighting of the walls and ceiling create a beautiful glow of the salmon colored salt can be very soothing. That, combined with the special wavelength of sound being softly played creates a very calm, soothing environment that cane be helpful for people with anxiety, stress and ptsd.
Who Should Have Halotherapy?
Anyone over the age of 1 year old can have a halotherapy session. People with the following issues may also find halotherapy very helpful:
- Colds/ Flu/Pneumonia/Bronchitis
- Cystic Fibrosis
How long is a session and what do I wear?
Salt room sessions are 45 minutes long. It’s very simple to get ready for one. You just take off your shoes and wear socks on your feet to enter the room. Lockers are provided for you to store any electronics such as watches, fitbits, key fobs, hearing aids and phones. The dry aerosol of salt can damage electronics so this is a perfect opportunity for you get some quiet time
Do I need an appointment?
We are happy to take walk-ins as time and space allow. We start sessions at the top of the hour. Once a session is started, we do not open the door to add others. For that reason, we recommend making an appointment so that you can have your session when it works best for you.
Will others be in the room with me?
There are 4 chairs in our salt room so you may be in the room with others. Since we have 4 chairs, we cannot guarantee that you will be in the room alone. For that reason, some people come as a group of 4 thereby guaranteeing they will have the room to themselves. If you have special circumstances that lend to you needing the space for yourself, please contact us and we are more than happy to discuss that with you.
There is nothing ‘private’ going on in a salt room to indicate you would need privacy. You are fully clothed and may even by using the blanket provided at each chair. There is no talking in the salt room and no electronics. Having said all that, we do our best to keep the room for the person who initially schedules any time slot. Many times, that is exactly what happens, but there are times that we have to put people together in the salt room.
Will I have salt on me or otherwise be messy when I leave?
No. Unlike when you have things like a massage or facial, you will not be messy at all after your session. Many people come in for a session during their lunch hour and go straight back to work.
What is the temperature in the salt room?
Our intention is to keep the room at 68 degrees with low humidity. We provide lightweight blankets at every chair. You are welcome to wear whatever you’d like into the salt room to adjust accordingly to that temperature. On days when the salt room is fully booked, it tends to be a bit warmer.
Do you offer any other services in the salt room?
Because of our smaller size, we do not offer any spa services or yoga in the salt room. We do have guided meditation available at an upgraded price (contact us for further information).
Can I take beverages into the salt room?
We do not allow beverages in the salt room. If anything would spill, it would damage the salt. We recommend you hydrate before and after your session.
Can I take my socks off in the salt room?
Absolutely! We require you to wear them walking into and out of the salt room but once in your chair, you are welcome to take them off and put your bare feet right into the salt. This is safer and cleaner than putting your bare feet into any sand on any beach since bacteria and viruses don’t survive well in salt. We have had many people tell us that the salt has helped their foot pain or injuries.
